What you expect from yourself as a caregiver and from caregiving on the whole matters more than you think. When you’re expecting yourself to be perfect or to handle everything differently than you’re able to, you’re more likely to feel disappointed and like you’re failing.
Are You Expecting Perfection?
What exactly are you expecting from yourself and from your experience as a caregiver? If you’re expecting to handle every situation perfectly, you’re likely to be disappointed. You don’t have to handle everything exactly right. There is leeway in just about every situation. What really matters is that you’re making the best possible decisions for your senior when you’re presented with an opportunity to do so.
Knowledge Is Power
The more you know, the better you’re going to get at this whole caregiving thing. That’s a really important detail because, in the beginning, you may not even know what you don’t know. You’re going to have to dig in and educate yourself on a variety of topics ranging from your senior’s health issues to all sorts of other concerns. Every change is going to mean that you need to learn something new. Embracing that fact is going to take you far.
Be Realistic about What You Can Do Alone
There’s a lot that you can do on your own as a sole family caregiver. But you honestly can’t do everything completely on your own. You need to be realistic with yourself about what your needs and limitations are so that you can be the caregiver that you want to be. That may mean admitting that you really can’t do it all completely by yourself.
Find Ways to Get the Support You Need
You’re going to be tempted to keep doing all of this by yourself. You really do need support and there are ways for you to get the support that you need. Hiring elder care services is just one way to support both you and your senior. Elder care providers understand what it’s like for caregivers to juggle everything that they’re juggling and they know how to help aging adults. Let them help.
When you are better able to manage your own expectations about caregiving, you’re less likely to feel as if you’re not measuring up as a caregiver. Remember that you’re always doing the best that you can with the tools and the information that you’ve got. Improving your information and your tools is going to help immensely.
