Skin Changes in the Elderly

If you are taking care of an elderly loved one, you may find they start having skin changes. These are common and many of them aren’t that big of a deal. However, certain ones may make your loved one feel older. This could cause them to want to socialize less or they may need medical help.

Wrinkles

Everyone knows how common wrinkles are in the elderly. The extent of the wrinkles can vary depending on the person and their lifestyle choices. Facial expressions are a common cause of wrinkles, too. In most people, wrinkles are inevitable. They are going to get at least a few of them. With this being said, most people don’t fret too much about getting wrinkles when they are older.

Dry Skin

There could be a wide range of reasons why your loved one has dry skin. They could have eczema or another skin condition. Dry skin is common as one gets older, too. This is because the skin glands don’t produce as much oil as someone gets older. If your loved one can’t remember to take the creams they are given by their doctor, they may need an elder care provider to help remind them.

Longer-Lasting Injuries

As someone gets older, their skin begins to thin out. This means if they get an injury, it is more likely to last longer. This goes the same with bruises, too. Due to the thinning of the skin, there is a higher risk of injury, as well. If you want to protect your loved one, be sure you hire an elder care provider to help keep an eye on them and any injuries they may have.

Age Spots

Your loved one may start getting age spots as they get older, too. This isn’t that big of a deal. However, many people do feel awkward with age spots. They may stop socializing with their friends because they are embarrassed. They may isolate themselves from loved ones, as well.

Increased Risk of Hypothermia and Heat Stroke

The elderly have an increased risk of hypothermia and heat stroke, too. This is because as someone gets older they don’t produce as much sweat. This makes it harder to keep cool increasing the risk of heatstroke. In the winter, there is less padding and insulation coming from the skin, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

These are some of the most common skin changes in the elderly. If you are caring for a loved one who is experiencing any of these skin changes, help to take care of them. While some of them aren’t that big of a deal, with others they may need a watchful eye to be sure they are alright.
